Learning objectives:

Students learn proverbs and phrases that are used in common conversations.

Implemented digital tools:

Quizlet.com, an iPad with a Quizlet app, or a digital device with an internet connection.

Supported digital competence for student:

Information and data literacy, Communication and collaboration

Elaboration of the competences:

Information and data literacy by learning new phrases and proverbs. Communication and collaboration by working together live (one option) in Quizlet.

Preparation:

The teacher needs to sign up for an account in Quizlet.com. He/she also needs to make his/her own study set for the proverbs and phrases to be trained in the lesson. (There is also a search option in the app; someone may already have created a study set you are looking for.You can modify someone else’s set or make a copy of one of your own to make sure you’re studying everything you need.) When your study set is ready you copy the link and put it in Google classroom for your students. You can also send the link by email.

introduction

Students work on their own in the beginning of the lesson but later on in pairs. The students learn new proverbs and phrases. They are instructed to go into Google classroom and find the link.

Implementation:

Students work with flashcards for the first ten minutes. They swipe right if they know the answer but left if they have to study it better. When they have studied all the flashcards they can start again from the beginning. The students work in learn and match mode for the following ten minutes. In the end they work in live mode in pairs. A question appears on the screen for only one of the pair but the answers are split between the two students’ screens. The students need to work together to find out which answer is right. If the students make a wrong move everything starts from the beginning, but the answers and questions will not be in the same order this time. It is better for the students to take a little time to answer and work on the answers together rather than guess.

Conclusion:

The teacher can see which pairs are the first to finish. If they give one incorrect answer everything starts from the beginning and they lose time. In the next lesson the students will work more with these proverbs and phrases in a writing assignment.

Implemented needed devices:

An iPad or a digital device with an internet connection.
