Elaboration of the competences:

Information and data literacy by finding out the meaning of words in a text and considering what words to use. Communication and collaboration by working together to use the app.

Preparation:

The teacher has to try out the Quizlet app prior to teaching and make sure that she/he knows the basics of it. The teacher has to create an assignment for students, for example a text the students must read and how many words minimum the students have to translate from English into their native language.

introduction

1) The teacher explains the assignment to students; what to do and what to look out for. 2) The teacher shows how the Quizlet app works by showing the students how to make folders, study sets and how to set the languages for terms (English) and definition (the native language of the students). The teacher also shows the students how to add pictures, how to use flash cards, how to test themselves, how to match words and so on.

Implementation:

1) Students get their ipads/tablets or computers/Chromebooks and open the Quizlet app. 2) The students start reading the text the teacher has prepared for them. 3) The students start using the app and adding words from the text that they need to work on and understand better. The students need to pick a minimum of two words from each paragraph. Steps two (2) and three (3) will take about 20-25 minutes. 4) After the students have finished their vocabulary chest they start practicing their vocabulary using flashcards; this will take about 5-10 minutes. 5) Then the students start trying out features like testing, writing and matching. The students get 15 minutes to try them out.

Conclusion:

Students will invite their classmates to try out their vocabulary chests by using Quizlet live.

Implemented needed devices:

Teachers and students need an iPad/ a tablet with Quizlet or computers/Chromebooks with an internet connection. The teacher needs a projector.
